NIL Rights Expanding
The NIL (Name, Image, and Likeness) rights landscape is rapidly evolving across both high school and college sports. Recent NCAA rule changes aim to provide greater transparency and resources to student-athletes navigating the NIL market. These include standardized contract templates and disclosure requirements to ensure fair and transparent dealings. It’s crucial for ADs at all levels to understand these developments to guide their athletes appropriately and ensure compliance with evolving regulations (Article from Ropes & Gray LLP law firm, 2024).
Equipment Management Advancing with Technology
Advancements such as RFID technology for inventory management have the potential to revolutionize equipment management in athletics. This technology, already prevalent in retail stores, can help track equipment usage and maintenance needs efficiently, which is essential for ensuring athlete safety and program compliance with safety standards. In professional sports, the NFL has partnered with Zebra Technologies since 2021 to track players and their equipment like helmets, shoulder pads and cleats (read more).
Mental Health Awareness Rising
Increasingly, educational institutions are recognizing the importance of mental health resources for athletes. This involves not only hiring sports psychologists but also implementing comprehensive wellness programs to support athletes’ mental well-being. This trend underscores the need for ADs to prioritize mental health resources within their programs. Accessories & Airflow Among AirPro® Locker Advantages
“We knew adequate storage was important for our new Melissa Championship Center – you can never have enough storage – but we weren’t sure what type to use,” says Duke Sparks, Director of Community Partnerships & Athletic Operations at Melissa High School in Melissa, Texas.
The new Melissa High School facility had opened four years ago; it’s growing on pace to become 6A in Texas in six years – the highest level. Of more than 1,600 students, over 300 of them are involved in football alone.
The athletic department was running out of space. In the research process, Sparks says they visited seven other high schools, along with three D-I colleges. One of the high schools had the GearBoss cart system. Recalls Sparks, “I knew about Wenger equipment for band, orchestra and choir, but nothing about the GearBoss line.”
